The East Lansing Police Department, in an attempt to keep crime to a minimum, would like to ask for the assistance of the public. You the public can take precautions that could lessen the chance of becoming a victim. There a re few friendly reminders that can reduce risk.
1. Keep garage doors closed.
Criminals often steal items such as bikes and golf clubs all hours of the day out of open garages.)
2. Lock all doors and windows when not at home.
3. Use outside lighting and keep shrubs trimmed.
Eliminate areas potential criminals could go undetected.
4. Report suspicicious situations.
Criminals occasionally knock on doors to see if anybody is home, and if the owner answers the door makes up some reason for being there such as ask for some fictitious person.
5. Have house numbers easily visible for faster response from the police.
6. Contact ELPD if somebody is in your neighbor’s or your own yard that does not belong.
Subjects picking up bottles out of a yard will often pick up anything else that is of value and sometimes enter homes or garages.
7. Report all thefts regardless of value.
Even if a report is not desired, contact ELPD so that the officers will have knowledge of the crime.
8. Communicate with neighbors.
Inform them when you are out of town and contact ELPD for a property check.
9. Record serial numbers.
And engrave your name and/or driver’s license number on valuables.
